This study is carried out to determine types of antimicrobials misuse with inappropriate use or
prescribing of drugs, specially the antibiotics. 250 persons, 250 prescriptions & 60 pharmacists
were included in this study. Findings revealed that antibiotics form 26.3% of total drugs used.
Amoxicillin was found to be the highest one used among antibiotics. The most antimicrobial drug
used in al Mukalla as over- the- counter product was found to be amoxicillin (39.40%). Those
people who use antimicrobial drugs with prescription are 33.07% and those without prescription
are 66.93%. 69.72% of patients use antimicrobial drugs according to doctors instructions, while
30.28% do use antimicrobial drugs not according to the instructions and the full time of the course
of treatment, and the causes were; feeling of recovery (60.92%), carelessness (12.64%), distrust
(6.90%) expensiveness of antimicrobial drugs (13.79%) and other causes (5.75%). 43.45% of those
using antibiotics without prescription have some knowledge about complications of antimicrobial
drugs and use it without prescription while 56.55% have no knowledge about the complications.
5.58% of those using antimicrobial drugs as over the counter were illetrate, 24.8% with low level
of education, 9.92% intermediate level and 58.28% with high level of education. For the role of
pharmacist, only 26.83% of pharmacists do not give the antimicrobial drugs without prescription
and 47.39% of pharmacists give explanation to patients about how to use the antimicrobial drugs.
