| Abstract Watching films, T.V. programmes or listening to songs and the news in English can be a potential resource for developing proficiency in English outside the classroom context. This resource, however, has not been utilized optimally owing to a number of obstacles. The present study investigated the advanced Iraqi EFL learners’ perception of these obstacles. Two research questions were explored viz., what are the potential obstacles perceived by the advanced Iraqi learners when listening to various aspects of live speech? What teaching implications can be pondered to overcome these obstacles? The data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to (100) 4th year students studying English language and literature at the College of Arts, College of Education and College of Basic Education, University of Mosul. The results indicate that the obstacles encountered are mainly associated with aspects of connected speech, improper listening strategies used and inadequate training. On the basis of the results obtained a number of teaching implications were made to overcome the main obstacles identified and suggestions for further research were made. | ||
