| Abstract This study is a socio-linguistic one dealing with the English death euphemisms and their Arabic equivalents which are employed at certain situations to avoid bad omens and avoid hurting others' feelings. The current study hypothesizes that death euphemism is a typical and common cultural phenomenon in both Arabic and English. The study aims at improving our understanding of the English and Arabic cultures concerning death aspects. So, it examines how some linguistic expressions are actually products of societal and cultural mores and pressures. How people use euphemism to talk about death is a direct reflection of these social concerns. In order to examine this sentiment, examples of death euphemism are extracted from Allen, K. and Burridge, K. (1991) Euphemism and Dysphemism: Language used as Shield and Weapon.
