| Lipid peroxidation occurs in human sperm cells with damage to the cell plasma membrane, leading to loss of cytosolic components and hence to cell ‘death’. The peroxidation may be induced at low contents of Glutathione in the spermatozoa of patients with asthenozoospermia, to determine the level of Glutathione (GSH), in the seminal and spermatozoal of patients with asthenozoospermia, this peptide was measured by Ellman's reagent. Malondialdehyd levels was assayed by spectrophotometry. This work was undertaken to assess oxidative stress and antioxidant status in patients with asthenozoospermia. The study was conducted on 20 patients and compared with 20 controls. Statistical analysis between group 1 (controls) and group 2 (patients) was performed by the student's t - test. It was observed that there was a significant decreased in seminal and spermatozoal Glutathione levels. While Malondialdehyd were significantly increased. The results of this study suggest higher oxygen-free radical production, evidenced by increased Malondialdehyd levels, support to the oxidative stress in asthenozoospermia. The decreased activities of antioxidant may be a result in response to increased oxidative stress. | ||
