Abstract
Background: Hypertensive nephrosclerosis (HN) is the second most common cause of end stage renal disease (ESRD), accounts for at least 26% of patients reaching end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The presence of microalbuminuria (MA) and proteinuria in people with essential hypertension is an independent risk factor for end organ damage and renal failure. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs) are among the most widely prescribed medicines in the world. Although effective for pain relief, these agents have been implicated in various forms of renal dysfunction. Our study is to evaluate the effect of naproxen on urine albumin excretion in hypertensive patients. Method: We included 46 osteoarthretic patients with normal urine albumin, 23 them are hypertensive, and other 23 are normotensive r.each patient followed up for 2 weeks. Results: After 2 weeks of naproxen administration, the albumin / creatinine ratio (ACR) increased ten fold in hypertensive patients, (increased from 27 ± 2.5 to 285 ± 62, p-value <0.05), while ACR did not changed in normotensive patients after naproxen treatment. Conclusion: Naproxen administration causes increment in urine albumin excretion in hypertensive patients, so nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be used with caution in all hypertensive patrients,and the follow up of urine albumin excretion in hypertensive patients receiving NSAIDs is recommended.
