Abstract
Abstract: Background: Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in the west .In the developing world it is the second leading cause of death, Infection being the first, and its prevalence is increasing due to the wide distribution of risk factors including the modifiable ones. Objective: It is aimed to study the prevalence of risk factors of (CHD) especially the modifiable ones and consequently to plan a suitable program to reduce them. Methods: A random sample study involved patients admitted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of the Al-Hussein general hospital through a period of five years .The study concentrated on collection of data concerning risk factors of (CHD) especially the modifiable risk factors, through a detailed history, full physical examinations, followed by elaborated relevant investigations. The data were then collected, analyzed and then recorded. Results: The number of patients studied was (540): (348) males and (192) females. Their ages ranged from (35- 80) years with an average of (59.6): Smoking was found in (328) patients: (252) males and (76) females, with a prevalence rate of (60.7%). Lack of physical activity was found in (244) patients: (120) males and (124) females, with a prevalence rate of (45.2%). Hypertension (HT) in (208) patients: (140) males and (68) females, with a prevalence rate of (38.5%). Obesity in (136) patients: (88) males and (48) females, with a prevalence rate of (25.2%). High Total Serum Cholesterol in 128 patients: (80) males and (48) females, with a prevalence rate of (23.7%). Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in (104) patients: (60) males and (44) females, with a prevalence rate of (19.3%). Conclusion: The study shows a high prevalence rate of modifiable risk factors, especially true for smoking, which shows an exceedingly high prevalence rate. Their control and prevention through national programs play a major role in the reduction of (CHD).
