Abstract
Spirometric measurements including forced vital capacity (FVC),forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1),forced expiratory volume ratio (FEV%) and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) were done for (26) worker employed in several old brick factories in Najaf Governorate who are exposed to different levels of occupational exposure within the factories. They are classified into three groups according to severity of exposure, mild, moderate and severe exposure groups. The mean forced vital capacity (FVC), and the mean forced expiratory ratio (FEV%) of the severe exposure group were significantly lower that of the mild exposure group (P <0.05).The mean forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) of the severe exposure group was significantly lower than that of the mild exposure group (P <0.01) and the mean forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) of the moderate exposure group was significantly lower than that of the mild exposure group (P<0.05).No significant differences were found among the three exposure groups regarding the peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR). It was concluded that the degree of decline in lung function differs among workers with different level of occupational exposure. Workers with close severe occupational exposure are at higher risk of respiratory morbidity than those with mild occupational exposure.
