| By using high resolution Capillary Gas-Chromatography the concentration and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)compounds were determined; in water and sediment in Four stations (Al-Sewaeb, Al- Teraba, Um Al-Wared and Um- Al-Neaj) of Al-Howaiza Marsh South of Iraq, for the period from August, 2005 to October, 2006. The total concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water ranged from (1) ng/L in Al-Swaeb to (16.04) ng/L in Um Al-Neaj during Summer, while during winter varied from (2) ng/L in Al-Swaeb to (50.8) ng/L in Um Al-Neaj with predominance of Phenanthrene and Low molecular weight PAHs over high molecular weight PAHs which indicate a Petrogenic origin for PAHs compounds in water. The total concentration of PAHs in sediment ranged from (0.1) ng/g D.W. in Al-Teraba to (40.4) ng/g D.W. in Um Al-Neaj during summer and between (18.5) ng/g D.W. in Al-Sweab and (145.8) ng/g D.W. in Um Al-Neaj during Winter. The sources of PAHs in sediment were Pyrogenic and Petrogenic depending on the ratio of low to high molecular weight of PAHs and the value of Phenanthrene to Anthracene ratio and the ratio of Flouranthene to Pyrene . | ||
