Abstract
This study tackles the theme of discontent or anxiety in different senses and variations in Al-Sayyab’s poetic works. It also digs deep into the reasons and motives behind the poet’s profound feelings of unceasing instability and overwhelming melancholy, constant conflict and latent detachment – so dominant in his ouvre. Such feelings would summon to mind an archetypal pattern of a highly-credited poet/philosopher as Abu Al-Ala’ Al-Ma’ari famed for his serene depression, anxiety and sorrow and blindness. Moreover, the study spots light on Al-Sayyab’s existentialist feelings of Loss and Sleeplessness, Discomfort and Despair, Death and Nothingness as they are expressed in many of his poetry. Hence, this study handles as a case the poet’s Collection entitled Shanashil Ibnat Al-Chalabi (The Antique House of Al-Chalabi’s Daughter) in particular claiming such aspects as more prevalent in this Collection than elsewhere; therefore, it is divided into the following sections: 1. Nature Discontents 2. Woman Discontents 3. Loneliness Discontents 4. Time Discontents 5. Nothingness and Despair Discontents 6. Life Discontents 7. Echo Discontents Each is traced in and substantiated with relevant extracts quoted from the above-mentioned Collection.
