| Abstract | ||
| During my long years in teaching, supervising and leading various examination committees, I have found general weaknesses in dealing with this typical issue in presenting a postgraduate written work in the modern history of Iraq. The historian needs two basic elements no matter what his main interest is: Firstly: a clear method of research. Secondly: a clear vision and a stable mind. One has to define “historical method” as a combination of rules, conditions and procedures that should be followed in writing history. While the researcher’s mentality means his personal entity. It is necessary to have other qualifications connected to the historian’s personality making him well qualified in terms of culture and open minded. This will help him in collecting different materials that can be presented in a good manner. It is a complicated mission and not easy to materialize without a wide range of knowledge with the ability to criticize, analyze and write history with absolute neutrality. The historian needs to develop his historic sense, his desire to study history, follow up various events with the purpose of reaching the historical fact and nothing else except the fact. The main purpose of this research is to shed some lights on the issue of historical method, discussing the problematic side surrounding this phrase and describing the various elements involved. There are some basic elements that should be available to those professors who undertake teaching this subject. If we could manage to administer these matters with some other issues properly and effectively; this will enhance and strengthen the M.A and Ph.D. thesis dealing with modern history of Iraq; which in the end will contribute in one way or another in helping reconstruction of higher education in Iraq. | ||
