| This experiment was conducted at Al-Ghawi poultry Co. / Babil governorate, during a period from 22 September 2003 to 3 March 2004. A total of 6000 hens and 540 males of broiler breeder (IPA 2000) were used and equally divided into two houses (3000 hens and 270 males per house ), also, each house was equally divided into three parts (1000 hens and 90 males each). Males in the house (1) was assigned to the uropygialectomy treatment for males at 38 wks of age (T1), whereas, house( 2) was assigned to the spiking treatment, replacement 33 % of males at 38 wks of age with 28-wks old males (T2). Six hatchs were used from each treatment (2 pre- and 4 post-treatment). Hatching eggs were collected during 31, 33, 41, 45, 49 and 53 wks of age (16800 eggs per hatch pre-treatment and 12600 eggs per hatch post-treatment). Fertility, hatchability, and embryonic mortality were studied. Uropygialectomy (T1) had significantly (P < 0.01) increased fertility and hatchability ( as a % of total eggs ), whereas, fertility was unaffected by spiking treatment (T2), but, T2 significantly (P < 0.01) increased hatchability (as a % of total eggs). Fertility and hatchability (as a % of total eggs) were significantly (P < 0.01) higher in T1 as compared to T2. Spiking treatment (T2) had significantly (P < 0.01) increased hatchability (as a % of fertile eggs) and decreased embryonic mortality. Hatchability (as % of fertile eggs) and embryonic mortality were unaffected by uropygialectomy (T1), also, there is no significant difference between the two treatments as related to these two traits. The current study provides good evidence that uropygialectomy can be used as a means for support fertility in broiler breeder males suffer from age-related decline in fertility . | ||
