Abstract
This study was conducted at Poultry Farm of Animal Resources Dept., College of Agriculture, University of Baghdad to investigate the effect of water supplementation with high levels of licorice extract on productive performance of broilers during a period from 10 Oct. to 5 Dec. 2002. One-day old Fawbro broiler chicks (n = 444) were used and randomly allocated to four treatment groups (3 replicates per group; 37 chick each). The treatments were as follows: Treatment 1 (control group) without supplementation of licorice extract, treatment 2: water supplementation with 500mg/liter of licorice extract, treatment 3: water supplementation with 750mg/liter of licorice extract and treatment 4: water supplementation with 1000mg/liter of licorice extract. These treatments were applied during the entire period of experiment (56 days). Productive traits included in this study were body weight, weight gain, feed consumption, feed conversion efficiency, water consumption and mortality.
Results revealed that Water supplementation with licorice extract increased mean body weight and water consumption and improved feed conversion. The T4 group was significantly (P<0.01) better than the other groups as regards live body weight and feed conversion. Weight gain and feed consumption were significantly (P<0.05) higher in all licorice treatments as compared with control group. Cumulative weight gain and feed conversion efficiency were significantly (P<0.05) increased due to treatment as compared to control, also, water supplementation with licorice extract led to decreased mortality versus control. Cumulative feed consumption was unaffected by treatment
