Effect of drinking water supplementation with high concentrations of licorice extract on certain blood traits of broiler chickens | ||

| This study was conducted at Poultry Farm of Animal Resources Dept., College of Agriculture, University of Baghdad to investigate the effect of drinking water supplementation with high levels of licorice extract on productive performance of broilers during a period from 10 Oct. to 5 Dec. 2002. A total of 444 Fawbro broiler chicks, one day old were used and randomly allocated to four treatment groups (3 replicates per group; 37 chick each). The treatments were as follows: T1 (control group) without supplementation of licorice extract to the drinking water, T2: drinking water supplementation with 500mg/liter of licorice extract, T3: drinking water supplementation with 750mg/liter of licorice extract and T4: drinking water supplementation with 1000mg/liter of licorice extract. These treatments were applied during the entire period of experiment (8 weeks). Blood traits included in this study were red and white blood cell counts, hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration, differential leucocyte count and concentrations of glucose, protein and cholesterol in blood plasma. Results revealed that supplementation the drinking water of birds with licorice extract (T2, T3 and T4) resulted in significant (p < 0.01) increase in red and white blood cell counts, hematocrit and hemoglobin concentration and significant decrease in heterophil to lymphocyte ratio. However, treatment with licorice extract resulted in significant (p < 0.01) increase in the concentrations of glucose and protein and significant decrease in plasma cholesterol as compared with control group (T1). Furthermore, the improvement in blood characteristics included in the president study was associated with the increasing of concentration of licorice extract in drinking water since the best means of studied blood traits were recorded for the high concentration of licorice extract (T4) in comparison with the other two treatments of licorice extract (T2 and T3). | ||
