| Abstract | ||
| The experiment was conducted at the college of agriculture poultry farm to determine the influence of dietary supplementation with varying amounts of anise seeds on productive performance of broilers. Four hundred day – old Ross broilers were divided into groups of 100 birds each and randomly assigned to the four treatment diets. Each four treatment have two replicates. Experimental groups were as follows: control groups (c) with no anise seeds addition, 1000 mg / kg anise seeds group (T1), 2000 mg anise seeds / kg feed group (T2) and 3000 mg / kg anise seeds group (T3). Characteristics included in this experiment were: Mean body weight, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, carcass weight, relative weights of carcass cuts, dressing percentage with or without giblets, relative weights of giblets (gizzard, heart, and liver) and mortality rate. The results revealed that the addition of anise seeds to broilers diet resulted in significant increase (P<0.01) in final body weight, total weight gain, total feed intake, total feed conversion ratio, carcass weight, breast weight, thigh weight, dressing percentage with or without giblets, gizzard weight, heart weight and liver weight and significant (P<0.01) decrease in wing weight, back weight, neck weight, abdominal fat and mortality rate. However T1 (1000 mg anise seeds / kg of diet and T2 (2000 mg anise seeds / kg of diet) groups recorded the best result as regards most of traits studied in this experiment compared to T3 group (3000 mg anise seeds / kg of diet). In conclusion, dietary supplementation with anise seeds particularly at the amount of 1000 mg (T1) and 2000 mg (T2) / kg of diet can improve productive performance of broiler chickens. Therefore, anise could be considered as a natural growth promoter due to digestive stimulating effect, positive effect on performance and antimicrobial effect. | ||
