Abstract
The paper investigates the use of the words of ecstasy, called here as “Deviations” as elements of poetics in Bushra al-Bustani’s “Ma’idat ul-Khamri Tadur—The Wine Table Spins”. The poem which is of sixteen stanzas is presented as an application for Julia Kristeva’s theory of the abject which she presents in her book Powers of Horror: an Essay on Abjection. The “jettison” of the abject in an artistic formation of a poetics of the abject co-opted in dire times of the war. Resistance of war is one result of this throwing out of the “atrocity” clothed in an aesthetics that is rendered able to defeat the occupation of Iraq. The poem is taken into the whirling movement, reminiscent of the Mevlevi dance, also known as the skirt dance. The overwhelming “spinning” of the poem is a method to discharge the “horrendous” reality of war.
