Clotrimazole is commonly used for treatment of fungal infections. Its
well known that, it has extremely low aqueous solubility. In this work, an
inclusion complex of clotrimazole with β -cyclodextrin was prepared by
phase-solubility technique as an attempt to enhance clotrimazole solubility
in water and consequently its therapeutic effect as antifungal agent.

Results showed that, the aqueous solubility of clotrimazole was
significantly increased after complexation with β-cyclodextrin and the
phase-solubility diagram was AL-type and the stiochiometric ratio of the
complex was 1:1.
Moreover, the physicochemical properties of the complex was
characterized by UV-spectrophotomertry, FTIR-spectrometry, and
differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). In addition, thermodynamic
parameters of the complex process Ks, ΔG°, Δ H°, and ΔS° were
determined. It was found that, the apparent stability constant values
decreased with increasing of temperature and the process of complexation
was spontaneous, exothermic and enthalpy-driven. |
