| Abstract | ||
| The present study was performed to assess the current status of hepatitis B seroprevalence in ten Iraq governorates (Baghdad /Kerkh,Duhok ,Arbil ,Nenava,Saladdin,AL- Anbar,Babel,Mesan,Theqar and Basrah) , with respect to age and gender. This study was conducted on 4196 subjects referred to the Viral Hepatitis Reference Laboratory in Iraq during April 2008 to December 2009, aged from 6-47 years with female to male ratio of 1.3: 1 . Antibodies against hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) were measured by use Enzyme linked immunoassay in order to determine hepatitis B infection. The highest overall seroprevalence was found in the Babel (15.9 %) , followed by Duhok (14.6 %), Saladdin (10.7%), Mesan (9.6%), Basrah (9.4%), Baghdad /Kerkh (8.9%) ,AlAnbar (8.5 %) ,Nenava(8.5 %) ,Theqar(8.3 %) and Arbil (6.1 %). In addition estimate the seroprevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) by employ Enzyme linked immunoassay .The highest (3.6 %) prevalence of HBs Ag was in Duhok ,while the lowest (0.7%)in Nenava. In all the governorates an increase in seroprevalence was found among persons within third to fourth decade . This study showed a variation in seroprevalence rates from one governorate to another. Possibly influencing the epidemiology of hepatitis B infection from governorate to governorate are differences in geography, climate, degree of urbanization, ethnic origin and sample size. | ||
