| The Information Documentation Center for the Arab Gulf States (IDCAGS) is considered one of the earliest regional information documentation centers in the Arab Gulf Region It was established in Baghdad in 1981.The center had several objectives perhaps the most important one was to obtain as much as possible of media production and literature in all its forms that serve researchers, students and workers in the fields of information and mass communication . This study aims at introducing the center and the reasons which called for its establishment and the objectives assigned to it and the nature of the information services it provided to its users. The center’s achievements during the decade 1981-1991 were stated. IDCAGS was selected as a field of this research because it was one of the pioneering institutions in the area of information documentation in the Arab world and the first hand experiences the author had with this center. He served as a director general of this center for five years. The importance of this study comes from the fact that it shed light on IDCAGS which was hoped to be the focal point of the Arab Gulf States Information Documentation Network. This network was planned to be part of the International Information Documentation Network. This initiative was not given the chance to succeed because of the Gulf War that took place in 1991 after which the center became part of the Iraqi Ministry of Information & Culture and its status was changed from regional to national foundation. The study also discusses the attempt of establishing a similar center to serve the GCC on the area of television & broadcasting. The author was asked to prepare a feasibility study for the proposed center. A detailed study was prepared in which the objectives of the center were stated, its departments & their functions were described. The study also pinpointed all the requirements and procedural steps to be taken to establish the proposed center & fulfill the jobs & tasks assigned to it The proposed study was presented to the GCC Seventeenth Conference of the Information & Culture Ministers Council that was held in Doha, Qatar, 3/ Nov. /2008. It was not approved. it. The study stated also the necessary measures to be taken for the completion of this project.
