The aims of this study were to determine chemical composition of methanolic seeds extract of Eruca sativa L as well as antibacterial activity and histological effects on selected organs (liver, kidney, heart, testis )of the male mice. The present study was performed to investigate the chemical composition of of the seeds of Eruca sativa .Proximate analysis and elements of seeds were carried out with the view to assess the therapeutic value. The result revealed the presence of Crude Proteins, Crude fiber, Total minerals ash, Crude fats, Total Carbohydrates and elements Cu, Mg, Fe. But the absence of heavy metals could be an indication that the investigated samples are free of toxic metals. The antibacterial activity of Aqueous , Methanol, and Oil extracts of the seeds of Eruca sativa L. by employing well diffusion techniques and Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay with some human pathogenic bacterial strains viz Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium. The oil extract showed the highest activity zone of inhibition of 13-31 mm at 100% concentration followed by methanol 13-21 mm extracts at 200mg/mL,but aqueous extract there was no zone of inhibition observed with any organism. A minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 6.25% was found for the oil extract against all bacteria tested indicating the presence of broad spectrum antibacterial compounds. methanolic seeds extract of Eruca sativa was given to male mice orally, via polythene cannula doses of 4,40 and 400mg/kg/day 14days. Mice were sacrificed at the end of the treatment period and their effects were studied specifically focusing on the histology of the liver, kidney , heart and testis. No pathological changes were evident at 4,40mg dose for liver, kidney and heart and Testis sections. However, the result of the work showed two harmful effects that are consistent with the treated group of animals of dose 400 mg/kg/day for 14 - days. The harmful effects were seen in the liver showed sinusoidal diluted and fatty changes and Testis showed destruction of basement membrane of the seminiferous tubules, but the kidney and heart of all the animals appeared normal compared to the control. In view of these pathological relevant results, it is not advisable to use such high doses of methanolic seeds extract of Eruca sativa .Additional future pharmacokinetics studies are suggested.
