| Political speeches, unlike ordinary conversation, are monologues rather than interactions; produced by the politician alone. They are long, and well prepared. They are in contrast with the opinion that long talk is undesirable, and preference should be given to brevity in communication. Since the audience is large, it is difficult to attract and sustain their attention, as Atkinson (1984:85) points out: The problem of securing and holding the attention of an audience becomes more and more difficult as the size of a group increases. An increase in numbers also progressively restricts the complexity of the ideas it is possible to put across, as well as the linguistic forms that can be used to convey them. Speakers avoid introducing too complex ideas, and use more elaborate and striking rhetorical patterns in order to attract the attention of the audience. They use rhetorical questions to function as argumentative presentations of a political agenda. We have to bear in mind that the frequency and structuring of rhetorical strategies is a matter of personal style. This article tries to offer a satisfactory account of rhetorical questions, and their functions in discourse, namely political speeches. | ||
