Abstract:
Objective: To determine the Knowledge & Practice of women toward abortion, especially the Unsafe induced abortion and it’s reasons, as it was considered one of major public health & social problem.
Design: A Cross – Sectional study.
Setting : The Gyn.& Obst.wards of 2 Hospitals in Baghdad :Al–Nouman General Hospital &Al –Yarmouk Teaching Hospital.
Method: Direct interview with 200 cases of abortion ,who had been admitted to the 2 Hospitals during the period from 15th of April to 15th of July 2002. By using questionnaire which include information regarding women knowledge and practice toward abortion and according to a scoring system, 3 levels of knowledge were obtained : Poor, Moderate & Good.
Data were also collected about the type of abortion, educational level of women, planing for pregnancy and reasons for induced abortion. Analyses of data were done by using frequencies & percentages, Chi – square test as test of significance, with P value = < 0.05 was considered significant.
Results: Out of the total of 200 cases of abortion, 21(10.5%) were unsafe induced abortion & 179(89.5%) were spontaneous abortion. 79(39.5%) of all & 17(80.95%) of unsafe induced abortion cases were with poor knowledge toward abortion. The highest percentage 84(42%) of abortion cases are with primary level of education. Most cases of induced abortion 17(80.95%) & of spontaneous type 132(73.74%) have poor knowledge about post abortion using of contraception, as well as the importance of anti D Ig after abortion in the Rhesus negative women. The majority of women 44(55.7%) who are with poor knowledge, have unplanned pregnancy (P= < 0.05). Most of the induced abortion cases 20(95.2%),have no planning for pregnancy. The unstable relationship & poverty were the main reasons mentioned for unsafe induced abortion.
Conclusion: Lack of knowledge and unsatisfactory practices toward abortion in general and unsafe induced abortion in particular, had been found among high proportion of the studied sample.
