Abstract
In this research the spatial relationship between food security and the agricultural environment has been analyzed spatially and temporally. An index for the food security represented by the per capita rate of agricultural production has been used. This index reflects the relationship between the size of production of field crops and the size of population. Another index for the change of the agricultural environment represented by the change of areas occupied by the land uses for planting field crops has also been used. The first index has represented the dependent variable in our statistical analyses whereas the second index has represented the independent variable. The case study data stand for the period (2002-2010). The hypothesis, here, attributes the problem of the research, i.e., the spatial variation of food security to this relationship. The use of GIS, here, shows a great importance in discovering the patterns of the spatial variation. In the analyses, we have used the regression technique which led us to determine how much power the independent variable, here, has to explain the spatial variation of the dependent variable. That has been proved by measuring the change of food security during the years of the time series which represented an independent variable. There appeared to be a tendency for the increase of the size of change with the increase of the number of years as measured by the regression coefficient. This is shown in two thirds of the units of the study area, whereas this situation is reversed in the last third. That has also been proved in the interpretation of the spatial variation shown by the relative residuals, where it strongly appeared in most of the units of the study area whether in 2002 or 2010. This refers to the role of the environmental agricultural change in finding forms of these spatial patterns. These moving trends of the relative residuals appeared in each of the years in the time series. This confirms the explanatory power of the independent variable in explaining the spatial variation of food security variable. The research, thus, shows the importance of considering the environmental agricultural change when developing any agricultural plan for food security, let alone the importance of adopting the regression model that has been reached at here for it presents a tool for prediction on the basis of the criteria that have been adopted.
