It explains them, argues about them, and defends them. In any case, 'ilm al-kalam is the study of Islamic doctrines and beliefs and in the past, it was also called "usul al-Din" or "'Ilm al-tawhid wa al-sifat". Islamic speculative theology. (‘Ilm al-Kalam) evolved during the Umayyad period over different opinion interpretations concerning the Holy Qur’an and over issues provoked, including those on predestination, free will, and the nature of God. The most prominent early theological trend was the early mu’taziah. In its scholastic argument defense, it asserted the supremacy of reason, inclined to free will, and rejected an anthropomorphic characterization of God. The ‘Abbasid Mu’tazilah school the Ash’ariya of the 10th-century school moved kalam back toward traditional approach, accepting, for example, the eternal, uncreated nature of the Qur'an and its literal truth. The school also represented the successful adaptation of Hellenistic philosophical reasoning to Muslim orthodox theology. |
