| Abstract | ||
| Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. The pathogenesis of this disease is related to several genetic, environmental and immunological factors. The current study is a trial to evaluate serum CEA measurement as a parameter monitoring disease activity and study the possible role of IL-6 in pathogenesis of UC. Serum CEA and IL-6 analysis were performed by using ELISA technique for 35 patients with ulcerative colitis compared to 20 apparently healthy controls. This study revealed a significant elevation in serum CEA and IL-6 levels among ulcerative colitis patients in comparison with healthy control. As well as an interesting significant differences (P<0.001) in serum CEA and IL-6 levels depending on disease activity. On the other hand there was strong linear association between serum level of these two parameters (P<0.001). In conclusion these finding suggest that CEA may be use as an indicator of disease activity in ulcerative colitis, and IL-6 may play an important role in pathogenesis of this disease. Moreover, positive association was found between serum levels of CEA and IL-6 and this may help in the understanding the pathogenesis of this disease and ultimately may be use in the development of a new therapeutic technique. | ||
