| Grape seeds contain several active components that possess a broad spectrum of pharmacological and therapeutic effects. The objective of this study is to investigate the biochemical activity of ethanolic grape seeds extract and to evaluate its effect on calf thymus double strands DNA (ctdsDNA) and DNA isolated from human lymphocytes. The UV-Visible spectra of ethanolic extract , its contents of polyphenols, flavanoids, allantoin and its ability of nitric oxide donating property were investigated. Its effects on peroxynitrite-induced DNA damage were also investigated using isolated human lymphocytes and ctds DNA of calf thymus. The results showed that grape seeds extract is rich in polyphenols and flavanoids. Grape seeds extract protected ctdsDNA damage induced by peroxynitrite and it prevented peroxynitrite induced-DNA damage in isolated human lymphocytes. It concluded that grape seeds extract had the property of scavenging the peroxynitrite, despite its ability to donate nitric oxide, and thereby it protected DNA from nitrogen species induced-damage. | ||
