Abstract
Abstract: The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse of department of soil sciences and water resources, Abu-Ghraib, Baghdad . using transparent glass basins 12530 cm dimensions to determine the effect of adding different levels of potassium alum (potassium sulfate and hydrous aluminum sulfate) K2SO4.Al2(SO4)3.24H2O, on number of rings (cracks), penetration resistance, and fraction coefficient for silty clay soil under two wetting and drying cycles, 3 and 6 days. After grinding, the potassium alum was added as a mixture powder with soil, uniformly. Tab water was added up to field capacity for 3and 6 days then, irrigated for 4 wetting and drying cycles. Results of the experiment showed a significant decrease in values of rings (cracks) number at increasing potassium alum, in which the control treatment was, 60 rings for the first period, 3 days, of wetting and drying, and decreased to 58, 16, 14, 4, 2 rings at the adding of potassium alum 1%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%, respectively. Wile, the for the second period, 6 days, of wetting and drying, the control treatment was 68 rings and decreased to 61, 18, 16, 7, 4 rings with increasing addition levels to 1%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%, respectively. The results also indicated that values of penetration resistance, significantly, decreased under the first and second wetting and drying periods at increasing addition levels of potassium alum, in which for the first period,3 days, of wetting and drying were 3.0, 2.05, 0.8, 0.71, 0.58,and 0.45 KPa., while for the second period,6 days, of wetting and drying were: 4.4, 2.2, 0.95, 0.79, 0.65, and 0.61 KPa. at adding the potassium alum as 0%, 1%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%, respectively. Also, the result indicated that the fraction coefficient values decreased at increasing of adding levels of potassium alum, in which, for the first period of wetting and drying were: 103.54, 43.62, 8.7, 5.96, 3.12, and 1.66 KPa. and for the second period were: 121.72, 65.59, 17.31, 14.41, 7.64, and 4.54 KPa. at adding alum as 0%, 1%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%, respectively. The result showed that the addition of potassium alum modified some of physical properties of silty clay soil.
