Abstract
Meat is an important food source to meet the need of the consumer of the protein, which is one of the criteria for measuring the development of well-being of the peoples of the world so seek to provide all the product types of red meat and white through local production or import in the absence of possibilities. But as witnessed in the Iraqi market from its inability to provide food needs due to lack of output current, and exposure to markets for red meat imports has affected the reality of the production of farm animals, creating a gap for a major food between what is available from animal products, local and what must be provided to cover those needs. This study aims to identify the reality of livestock in Iraq through the study of one of the main vocabulary, namely red meat, And to identify the reasons for the high price of Iraqi red meat in order to develop solutions to address this phenomenon. . And identify the views and attitudes of consumers in the province of Baghdad on the nature and quantities and types of red meat consumption and the reasons for preferring a specific type of another type. Questionnaire method was adopted as a tool to execute the search by examining the views and attitudes of a random sample of consumers in Baghdad. The study results showed that the most prominent reasons for the high price of red meat is the lack of Iraqi government support in terms of providing feed and veterinary treatments as well as the prevalence of smuggling of livestock out of Iraq. Statistical analysis also showed that the sizes of families in Baghdad are large and those families consume large amounts of red meat, and that consumer preferences for meat imported back due to high prices of red meat, although the Iraqi quality of local product. In addition to cheap prices of imported meat and give religious legitimacy to be addressed and which will affect negatively on the production and consumption of red meat in Iraq.
