| Abstract | ||
| This study provides information on "fixed expressions" which have taken the interest of many scholars working in the field of linguistics. As appears, these expressions facilitate the use of the language and add a flavor to the communication process. Fixed expressions have been studied in (a new developed field known as) 'phraseology'. Some points will be mentioned about phraseology; and then every aspect about fixed expressions will be mentioned to arrive at a unified and clear image about the subject. It is hypothesized that students lack many information about such expressions, such as their structures and their functions in discourse. Therefore, our main aim is to find whether the students in Tikrit University are aware of such expressions, i.e., two main questions are handled in this study: (Do they know what is meant by fixed expressions?) and (Do they know the main functions of such expressions?). The fourth year students in the Translation Department in Tikrit University are involved in this study. Forty students are chosen for the purpose of this study. | ||
