Abstract
This paper tackles the issue of gemination , which has been focused upon by linguists. It is the linguistic phenomenon of the sequence of two identical adjacent segments of a sound in a single morpheme . These long geminates whether true or fake are characterized by inseparability or integrity to the extent that they can be treated as either a single long sound or as a pair of sounds . Eventually , linguists have divided into two parties . On the one hand , Abu Al- Abass Al-Mobarid , Safiy Al-Dean Al-ossterabaddi , Mondariss , Henry Flech and the like believe that this doubled segment forms but one long sound originated by embedding one segment in the other . On the other hand , Al-Farahidi , Sebaweigh , Al-Jourjani , Shekh Mustafa Al-Ghalayini and Dr. Dawood Abdeh analyse a geminate into two successive consonants as in the case of the Arabic verb [med:] which is traced back as [med э d э] in origin. Having taken the two linguistic points of view ; namely, [med:] and [med э d э] into much consideration and by applying a linguistic approach to a number of verses from the Holy Qur'an , the researcher concluded that a geminate cannot phonologically be treated as a single long consonant . At the same time , it is phonetically described as a pair of successive consonants that are produced too rapidly to have any room for the process of dropping or deleting the schwa if there is any .
