Abstract
In this work, three types of high oxidation state of transitions element complexes were prepared and used for first time as thermal initiators of vinyl polymerization. These initiator are: Chloro[oxobissalicylaldehyde) ethylene diaminato]Vanadium(V);(VOLCl),Chloro[(bis(salicylaldehyde)ethylenediaminatoaqua] Chromium(III);(CrLH2OCl) and Chloro[(bis(salicylaldehyde)ethylene diaminatoaqua] Manganese (III)(MnLH2OCl). It was found that these initiators can initiate the free radical polymerization of acrylamide (AA) at (80) ◦C in the dark without inhibition or retardation complication and the rate of polymerization is directly proportional to the square root of initiator concentration for all initiators .The order with respect to the initiator concentration is (0.4, 0.5 and 0.6) where is the order with respect to the monomer concentration is (1.1, 1.3, 1.4) for initiators (I, II, III) respectively which indicates that the rate of initiation is dependent on monomer concentration. The values of kp / kt1/2 at (80) ◦C for AA are rather low (1.39, 1.54 and 2.26) for the three initiators. The rate of thermal decomposition of these complexes is also evaluated and was found to be dependent on the type of initiator and is increased from I to III Activation energy of polymerization and initiation (Ei) in the present system were also determined and it was found that: ETEi (I) > ETEi (II) > ETEi (III). According to kinetic and spectral observation, the mechanism of initiation by these initiators was suggested. Gravimetry technique is used for determination of the rate polymerization, and viscometry is used for determination of average of polymerization. The Uv-visble spectrophotometry is used to determine the rate of initiator decomposition and IR spectrophotometry, atomic absorption and conductivity molar and chlor measurement is used to identify the initiators structure
