Abstract
Diabetes mellitus Type 2 is on track to become one of the major global public health challenges of the 21st century. It is an endocrinological disease associated with hyperglycemia characterized by both insulin resistance and defective insulin secretion. Hyperglycemia is considered a primary cause of diabetic vascular complications and is associated with oxidative stress, and impaired trace element. Current study.This study was re 35 cases (20 male and 15 female) of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and approximately 32 individuals as control group with similar age and sex distribution. Serum ceruloplasmin concentration and its oxidase activity as well as copper concentration were measured in sera of all studied groups. The [Cu]/[Cp] ratio was calculated in sera of the studied groups. The results of the current study revealed the presence of a highly significant increase in ceruloplasmin concentration, ceruloplasmin oxidase activity and copper concentration in sera of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in comparison with that of the control group (P< 0.001). While the results of [Cu]/[Cp] ratio in the present study revealed that there was no significant difference in [Cu]/[Cp] ratio between patients with patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and control group (P> 0.05).
