| Abstract | ||
| This paper discusses the role of Identity in news construction in old Arabic narration, and how this role is reflected in Al-Tanookhi’s books. It deals with how the author manipulated the narration by choosing, classifying and directing his news under the influence of his Identity, for the latter plays an active role in shaping the individual’s thoughts and behavior, as well as his/her view to the past, present and future. It also specifies the groups to which he/she belongs and it also specifies the ‘Other’ and the way to deal with it. The paper addresses this issue in Al- Tanookhi’s Nishwar Al- Muhadherah wa Akhbaar Al- Muthakera. His ‘news’ are dominated by his Identity, for he was a fierce defender of his multiple affiliations, often unjustly rejecting the Other, while only rarely accepting it. Al-Tanookhi is thus following in a tradition of writers, a tradition that was reproduced with only minimal differences. Al-Tanookhi represents a sample case for how Identity forms news, with the results of this study being applicable to other writers as well. | ||
