Abstract
The histological study of current work was completed to appear and compare the general arrangement and distinguish the calcification in the heart wall of Quails and Broiler Chickens. The study involved 10 male quails and 10 male chickens. The heart samples were excised and fixated with 10% neutral buffered formalin, and then cardiac specimens were washed and carried to fallow routine histological steps. Through the staining step, two dyes were used: the hematoxylin and eosin stain (H&E) for showing the general cardiac layer structures and the Alizarin Red stain to identify the deposition of calcium salts in the cardiac tissues. The histological findings by using H&E were that the heart wall for two species of studied birds consists of three major layers: the inside stratum endocardium, the intermediate myocardium, and the outside stratum epicardium. In two experimental species, the histological arrangements of heart layers were predominantly analogical. The histochemical findings via an alizarin red dye revealed a profusely deposition of calcium, which was observed as calcification in the form of dark points scattered widely within the myocardium in quail birds. In chickens, the results showed the high amount of calcification appeared as great dark foci spread in an identified area of myocardium. The statistical analysis demonstrated that the value of calcium accumulation in cardiac muscle of quail more than appeared in broiler chickens. This rise in myocardium calcification may be interrelated with the advancement of age, which is probable related to a physiological disorder in the level of blood calcium.
