| Abstract—The study is a pragmatic assessment of the English interpretation of Arab leaders’ speeches at the UNGA. The model used is Grice's redefined maxims, which are applied effectively to assess the interpretation of Arab leaders' speeches into English. Philosopher Grice, who is neither interpreter nor linguist, studied situations from everyday conversations to achieve the best communication. In this study, interpretation is seen as a means of communication between people of two different languages. It covers four criteria used in the analysis and discussion of the speeches selected; they are maxims of quality, quantity, relevance, and manner. It aims to uncover the extent to which the criteria are preserved in the interpretations and to produce effective communication between the source language and the target language. It suggests that differences between English and Arabic in language and culture affect how well interpretations are done and that some maxims are prioritised over others, leading to inaccurate versions of the original language. To achieve the hypotheses, a comparative textual analysis of original Arabic speeches and their English interpretations at UNGA sessions is selected and analysed. Pragmatic changes and weaknesses affecting the speakers rhetorical force and cultural importance are recognized. The finding reveals that most of Grice’s redefined maxims were adhered to in the interpretation, with the relevance maxim scoring the highest percentage of success and the maxim of manner with the lowest percentage of success. The study concludes with recommendations that would improve the quality of interpreting diplomatic speeches and comprehending their deep meanings. | ||
